Location
Tacombi is a proven concept for authentic Mexican food that now has several locations across the U.S. I came across this restaurant while exploring the well-known Fort Greene neighborhood in Brooklyn. Tacombi sits directly on the corner of Lafayette Avenue and Ashland Place. The restaurant is surrounded by trendy cafes, beautiful historic brownstone buildings, parks, theaters, and cultural venues. Tacombi is easily accessible from the C train at Lafayette Ave, multiple bus stops, or a short walk from Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center. The block has a relaxed bustling vibe that can be enjoyed from the restaurant patio.
Ambience
Tacombi is warm and inviting. It is easy to feel as if you have been transported somewhere far from the busy Brooklyn streets the moment you walk in.The bold decor contrasts beautifully against the light cream colored walls and ceiling, creating a space that feels festive, cozy, and clean. The music is low but the conversation is high, which gave me the warmth of sitting in someone’s kitchen. I did not get a chance to sit outdoors, but the bars around the patio mimic the charm of typical verandas found in warmer climate communities. It feels a little caged in to me, but I’m sure it’s a great time!
Service
I visited this restaurant on a Friday evening around 6:30 PM, so of course the it was packed. The staff was very busy with a full house, but they still acknowledged me. I was a party of one, but they cleared a table quickly, and fortunately got me seated right away. My server was quick to greet me and take my drink order, not much time for small talk given the rush, but the service was still professional and courteous. Anything I requested was brought out quickly. My table was checked on attentively without ever feeling rushed or overlooked. Overall, the service was great and my server was clearly in their zone.
Menu Variety
The menu was simple, clean, and direct, making it easy to decide without the usual decision fatigue that comes with larger menus. It featured a handful of appetizers, a solid assortment of tacos, quesadillas, burritos, churros, cocktails, and agua frescas.
Presentation
The plateware and serveware were functional and no frills, very much in keeping with a casual taqueria setting. Everything was clean. The food was definitely the star.
Food
I ordered their ‘guacamole con totopos’ (featured above) and two tacos. I was under the assumption that the totopos were going to be hard and crunchy like a thick tortilla chip; however, their totopos were sliced tortillas. At first, I was slightly disappointed because I live for the crunch of a tortilla chip, but it was surprisingly satisfying. They provided a spoon but I just used the tortilla to scoop the guacamole from the bowl.
Their menu mentions that the tacos are made with ‘Vista Hermosa’ corn tortillas. While I was waiting for my tacos, I googled to learn more about exactly what type of tortillas these were. These “vista hermosa” tortillas are Tacombi’s very own creation! They make their corn tortillas in-house using an ancient Aztec process where whole dried corn is soaked in water and lime, then ground on volcanic stones to create fresh masa. The result is a clean, high-quality tortilla that is gluten-free (yay!), USDA Organic, and non-GMO. The tacos were juicy, flavorful, and filling. As someone who pays close attention to tortillas, I was highly impressed. The tortillas were thin enough to fold yet strong enough to handle the weight of the contents. I wanted to order a third taco but I was near full.

A little on the expensive side for street tacos, but all things being considered and in a trendy Brooklyn neighborhood, it’s worth it!
I recommend for all types of experiences that would not require a tranquil or quiet, intimate experience. The restaurant is relaxing but more upbeat in rhythm and pace. It can also tend to get a little on the louder side from guests having a good time or the music, and tables are close together. Still a really good time!
