Location & Access
La Alvarada Medieval de Cañete is a local festival that takes place in the town of Cañete in the Cuenca province of Castilla La Mancha, Spain. While you can get here by regional bus, I only recommend it if you want to sit back, enjoy the countryside, and don’t mind a 3-to-4-hour ride. Like most travelers, I find it much easier to arrive by car.
The Town
Before heading to the festival, I used the earlier part of my afternoon to walk around Cañete. Outside of what I would can the “fairgrounds”, the town was quiet and cozy. I happened to began walking around at the heat of day, prime”siesta time”, so rarely anyone was outside. Nestled amid the living spaces are the well-preserved Moorish archeitecure, horseshoe gates, and untamed Spanish countryside. A unique feature of the city is its collection of permanent, life-sized, hyper-realistic steel sculptures. Sprinkled throughout the streets, they pay homage to the town’s rich history, landmarks, and traditions.
La Alvarada Medieval de Cañete
Locally called “La Alvarada,” this annual summer festival celebrates the town’s rich medieval heritage and honors the historic figure of Constable Álvaro de Luna through vibrant living history reenactments, cultural tournaments, and artisan markets. Although it is smaller than the medieval fair hosted in Cuenca, it still packs a powerful punch of an experience. With live music played by bards, roasted food on spits, hand-sewn clothing, and a knights’ jousting tournament, I had such a great time!
Tips & Recommendations
- Arrive early to secure parking close to the fairgrounds
- Wear comfortable, loose and light, or moisture-wicking clothing because it was HOT, and there was very little shade.
- The event is extremely crowded so make sure you secure your belongings.
Value for Money
Attending this event is highly affordable, with most of the activities being completely free. Food and drinks range reasonably from 1 to 10 euros, while artisan market prices vary depending on the craft.
This off-the-beaten-path-experiences is perfect for any traveler or group of travelers looking for something original and entertaining to do!
